Sednev is a real tourist place - we guarantee it!

If you going to Chernigiv (Chernigov is fine to…) consider a short visit to Sedniv (Sednev). It it only 25 km from Chernigiv and there are some good reasons to come here.

First of all,  Sedniv is a good example of glorious past and ugly present – you can still see some architecture, park and listen to stories of the past. By the way, the town was founded in 12th century.

Second reason is  beautiful nature of Ukrainian North. Snov river has really amazing landscapes and a lot of people come here for vacation  in the summertime.

We came there late fall and unfortunately missed the local folk festival (it is called Sedniv Autumn), but absence of people and tourist groups was quite pleasant. Sorry for mobile phone pictures, next time we will be more prepared :)

The central house of the Lyzogub family – great noble Cossack dynasty. They made Sedniv famous. Now it is the local school with wooden toilets outside.

Younger Lyzogubs – Andriy and Illya were big benefactors and fine arts admirers. Andriy was a friend of Taras Shevchenko – the great Ukrainian poet.

So, Taras Shevchenko lived there, here is the proof at the gate to the house and park.

Cossack Prison.

This  famous wooden church is closed normally but can be open in 15-20 minutes after you call to a local guide. For a small fee that will let you in and tell how the first Soviet horror movie “Viy” was filmed here.

Even though Sedniv considered to be tourist place you will not find anything in English, so bring your own guide or translator. There are rumors about some Ukrainian food restaurant, but we didn’t manage to find it – so we rushed back to favorite Chernigov food places.

The road from Chernigiv to Sedniv is quite nice, you can even come to Sedniv by regular bus from Chernigiv bus station.

Also Sedniv is the cult place for Chernihiv bohemia because of the  Soviet artists’ resort place. Nothing special to look at if you are not one of them – just ordinary concrete building not far from Lyzogub house.

If you have more time and the weather is  cold enough we can recommend nice sauna at the Snov river bank – you can jump straight into water after heating. It prolongs you life and give you some +50 point to health :). You can ask for contacts in comments.
